This music course textbook has a number of related goals: 1) to learn a variety of music traditions in Western Europe, the United States (art music, jazz, folk, rock, and musical theater), and from Africa, India, China, South America, and the Caribbean; 2) to understand concepts of melody, rhythm, harmony, texture, timbre, and form used by musicians; and 3) to understand sources of musical sounds, instruments and voices from different cultures, electronically generated sounds, and principles that determine pitch and timbre.
